Usually, the migration process includes transferring all your data from multiple spaces within your intranet and then migrating, making the process more tedious. And to avoid this conflict, Microsoft has its tool called Migration Manager, which can easily be accessed from the modern SharePoint Admin Center.

This tool helps in a centralized way for setting up agents, creating tasks, viewing and monitoring the progress, and downloading the summary report of the migration.

The most common queries are Gmail to Office 365 migration, Lotus Notes to Office 365 Migration, Exchange on-premises to Office 365 migration, etc. All these are sub-parts of migrations from one database infrastructure to another, and this happens through a process.

This process has three steps, as shown in the image above.

Set up Migration Manager agents:

The first step in the process whole process is this. A setup file needs to be downloaded and installed in all the machines the data is coming from. And the setup file will create a link between source and destination, i.e., your machine and Migration Manager.

Create Task:

After the connection is set up, the creation of the migration task is next. Enter the URL or path of the network file to be migrated as the source and URL of SharePoint site placing as your destination. The tool will perform tasks for you here now. It will automatically distribute tasks to agents you elected.

Monitor and Report:

Monitor the process of migration by viewing and downloading reports.

There are some permissions you need to have to migrate local files before proceeding with these steps:

  • You need admin permission to access the Migration Manager page in the new SharePoint admin center.
  • You need to be a global admin or OneDrive/SharePoint admin in Microsoft 365 tenant where files are being migrated.
  • You need read access to any network file shares that are being migrated for source.
  • There are some prerequisites for machines and virtual machines.

End users also need to be considered. You have to talk to them about the migration and the downtime it may bring. An overview and training sessions must be organized as some users might find it difficult to adopt the new collaboration systems.

There is another tool by Microsoft called SharePoint Migration Tool (SPMT). Where Migration managers can only manage to migrate from local files, SPMT helps you migrate on a larger scale. It supports migration to SharePoint Online and OneDrive from SharePoint Server 2016, SharePoint Server 2013, SharePoint Foundation 2013, SharePoint Server 2013, SharePoint Foundation 2010, and from your local file share.

For any kind of migration process, whether off-premises to the cloud or one infrastructure to another, you need Office 365 Migration services providers to help you with smooth migration without data loss and the least downtime.
